How it works: the 2026 federal standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly) comes off your salary first, then the 2026 federal brackets (10%–37%). FICA is applied properly: 6.2% Social Security on the first $184,500 of wages (2026 wage base), 1.45% Medicare on all wages, plus 0.9% additional Medicare on wages above $200,000 single / $250,000 married filing jointly. State tax applies each state’s own standard deduction/exemptions, then its brackets or flat rate. Local income taxes are not included — many cities and counties (e.g. New York City, Philadelphia, most of Ohio, Maryland counties, Indiana counties, Kentucky) levy their own payroll taxes on top of the state tax.

State base rates are the 2026 state-level rates (local add-ons excluded). Actual combined rates vary widely by city and county — many localities add 1–5%. Five states have no statewide sales tax (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon), though some localities still levy local taxes.

Mortgage calculator for New York homes

The average effective property tax rate in New York is about 1.55% of a home’s value per year. When you use the mortgage calculator below, enter roughly that percentage of the home price in the yearly property tax field for a realistic New York monthly payment.

How it works: your loan amount (price minus down payment) is repaid in equal monthly instalments using the standard amortisation formula, so early payments are mostly interest and later ones mostly principal. Property tax and insurance, if entered, are simply spread evenly across each month. Your actual rate and payment will depend on your lender, credit profile and the deal you choose.

Earn $75,000 in New York and the state takes $3,453.00 before you ever think about the city’s cut. And there may well be a city’s cut: New York City layers its own income tax of 3.078% to 3.876% on top of the state tax, something no other big American city does at that scale. Where exactly you live inside this state changes your paycheck by thousands of dollars a year — upstate and the five boroughs are effectively two different tax countries sharing one flag.

Income tax in New York in 2026

New York’s state tax runs through nine brackets for single filers. The first slices are modest — 3.90% up to $8,500 of taxable income, 4.40% to $11,700, 5.15% to $13,900, then 5.40% across the wide band up to $80,650. Above that the climb steepens: 5.90% to $215,400, 6.85% to $1,077,550, and then 9.65%, 10.30% and a top rate of 10.90% on income over $25,000,000.

The state standard deduction for a single filer is $8,000. That’s roughly half the federal deduction — one reason New York’s tax feels heavier than the bracket rates alone suggest. There’s no personal exemption, though you can claim a $1,000 exemption for each dependent.

Now the part out-of-staters always miss. New York City residents pay city income tax too, at rates from 3.078% to 3.876%, and Yonkers adds a surcharge of its own. The calculator on this page models the state tax only, so if you live in the city, mentally add roughly another 3% to 3.9% of your taxable income to the state figure. On a $75,000 salary that’s around $2,000 more a year — not a rounding error.

Worked example: $75,000 salary, single filer

Step 1 — Federal tax. $75,000 − $16,100 = $58,900 taxable, which is $7,670.00 in 2026.

Step 2 — FICA. Social Security plus Medicare: $5,737.50.

Step 3 — New York State tax. $75,000 − $8,000 standard deduction = $67,000 of taxable income. Slice by slice: 3.90% of $8,500 = $331.50; 4.40% of the next $3,200 = $140.80; 5.15% of the next $2,200 = $113.30; 5.40% of the remaining $53,100 = $2,867.40. Total state tax: $3,453.00.

Step 4 — Take-home pay. $75,000 − $7,670.00 − $5,737.50 − $3,453.00 = $58,139.50 a year, about $2,236.13 per bi-weekly paycheck — before any New York City tax. The state’s effective rate here is 4.60%, and a city resident’s combined state-plus-city effective rate pushes past 7%. Same state, same salary, two very different payslips depending on your ZIP code.

Sales tax in New York

The state base rate is just 4.00% — one of the lower state rates in the country. Don’t let it fool you. Counties and cities stack their own taxes on top, averaging another 4.54%, so New York City’s combined rate is 8.875% and most of the state checks out somewhere between 8% and 9%.

A $1,000 purchase in the city carries $88.75 of tax, against $40 of state tax alone. The calculator on this page starts from the 4.00% state base; if you’re shopping downstate, the real number is roughly double it.

Property tax in New York

New York’s average effective property tax rate is 1.55% — on a $300,000 home, about $4,650 a year. But that statewide average hides one of the widest spreads in America. Downstate suburban counties — Westchester, Nassau, Rockland — post some of the highest property tax bills in the nation, routinely over $10,000 a year on ordinary houses, while many upstate counties sit far below the average.

The practical lesson: in New York, your property tax is really a town-and-school-district tax. Two homes at the same price can carry bills $5,000 apart. Price the specific address, never the state average.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator include New York City income tax?
No — it shows state tax only, because the city tax applies only to city residents. NYC’s rates run 3.078% to 3.876%. If you live in the five boroughs, add roughly that percentage of your taxable income to the figure you see.

I live in New Jersey but work in Manhattan. Do I pay both states?
New York taxes you first, because the income was earned there. New Jersey then credits most of that New York tax against your New Jersey liability. You don’t pay full freight twice, but you do file two state returns forever.

Why is New York’s standard deduction so much smaller than the federal one?
The state sets its own, and it has never tracked the federal amount. At $8,000 for single filers, roughly half the federal deduction, more of your salary is exposed to state tax from the start.

Is remote work taxed by New York if I live elsewhere?
It can be. New York’s “convenience of the employer” rule taxes days worked remotely for a New York employer as New York income unless the remote work is required by the employer. It surprises a lot of people who moved away but kept the job.

Run your salary through the New York paycheck calculator above for the state-only figure — then, if you’re in the city, knock off another 3% or so for the city’s share and you’ll be close to the real payslip.
