Hawaii Paycheck & Tax Calculators — 2026

Hawaii runs a graduated state income tax in 2026, with rates from 1.4% up to 11% depending on how much you earn, on top of federal income tax and FICA. Single filers get a standard deduction of $4,400. Use the calculators below to see your exact 2026 take-home pay in Hawaii, check the sales tax on a purchase, and estimate a mortgage payment with Hawaii property taxes factored in.

How it works: the 2026 federal standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly) comes off your salary first, then the 2026 federal brackets (10%–37%). FICA is applied properly: 6.2% Social Security on the first $184,500 of wages (2026 wage base), 1.45% Medicare on all wages, plus 0.9% additional Medicare on wages above $200,000 single / $250,000 married filing jointly. State tax applies each state’s own standard deduction/exemptions, then its brackets or flat rate. Local income taxes are not included — many cities and counties (e.g. New York City, Philadelphia, most of Ohio, Maryland counties, Indiana counties, Kentucky) levy their own payroll taxes on top of the state tax.

State base rates are the 2026 state-level rates (local add-ons excluded). Actual combined rates vary widely by city and county — many localities add 1–5%. Five states have no statewide sales tax (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon), though some localities still levy local taxes.

Mortgage calculator for Hawaii homes

The average effective property tax rate in Hawaii is about 0.27% of a home’s value per year. When you use the mortgage calculator below, enter roughly that percentage of the home price in the yearly property tax field for a realistic Hawaii monthly payment.

How it works: your loan amount (price minus down payment) is repaid in equal monthly instalments using the standard amortisation formula, so early payments are mostly interest and later ones mostly principal. Property tax and insurance, if entered, are simply spread evenly across each month. Your actual rate and payment will depend on your lender, credit profile and the deal you choose.

Twelve brackets. No other state has that many, and Hawaii’s top rate of 11% is the second-highest in America. But here’s the twist most older guides get wrong: the brackets are now roughly twice as wide as they used to be, so a $75,000 salary doesn’t climb as high up that ladder as it once did.

Income tax in Hawaii in 2026

Hawaii’s system is progressive, steeply so at the top, with these twelve brackets for a single filer:

  • 1.4% on taxable income from $0 to $9,600
  • 3.2% on taxable income from $9,600 to $14,400
  • 5.5% on taxable income from $14,400 to $19,200
  • 6.4% on taxable income from $19,200 to $24,000
  • 6.8% on taxable income from $24,000 to $36,000
  • 7.2% on taxable income from $36,000 to $48,000
  • 7.6% on taxable income from $48,000 to $125,000
  • 7.9% on taxable income from $125,000 to $175,000
  • 8.25% on taxable income from $175,000 to $225,000
  • 9% on taxable income from $225,000 to $275,000
  • 10% on taxable income from $275,000 to $325,000
  • 11% on taxable income over $325,000

Act 46, passed in 2024, roughly doubled the width of these brackets. If you’ve seen a Hawaii tax guide showing much narrower bands — the old 7.6% bracket starting around $48,000 was once far tighter — it’s outdated. Wider brackets mean more of your income is taxed at the lower rates before you reach the next step.

The standard deduction is $4,400, and there’s a personal exemption of $1,144. Both are modest next to the federal standard deduction of $16,100, which is part of why Hawaii’s bite at middle incomes surprises people who only looked at the 1.4% starting rate.

Worked example: $75,000 salary, single filer

Step 1 — taxable income. $75,000 minus the $4,400 standard deduction and the $1,144 personal exemption gives a state taxable income of $69,456.

Step 2 — state tax. Worked through the brackets, the Hawaii tax is $4,169.86 — the highest state tax of any state at this salary in our series. The effective rate is about 5.6% of gross pay. That 11% top rate isn’t what does it; it’s the steady climb through the middle brackets.

Step 3 — federal tax. Federal income tax is $7,670.00, after the federal standard deduction of $16,100.

Step 4 — FICA. Payroll taxes total $5,737.50: $4,650.00 for Social Security and $1,087.50 for Medicare.

Step 5 — take-home. $75,000 minus $4,169.86, $7,670.00 and $5,737.50 leaves $57,422.64 a year, about $2,208.56 every two weeks.

Sales tax in Hawaii

That 4.00% at the register isn’t technically a sales tax. Hawaii charges a General Excise Tax, or GET — a broad tax on business gross receipts, levied on the business rather than the sale. Businesses usually pass it on to customers, and the amount you’ll typically see added is about 4.166%, slightly above the headline rate.

At the state rate, a $1,000 purchase works out to $40 of tax. The practical difference from a mainland sales tax? The GET reaches further. It applies to services and business activity that many states never tax at all, which is why everyday costs in Hawaii can feel taxed even where no sales tax would apply elsewhere.

Property tax in Hawaii

Now for the genuine bargain. Hawaii’s average effective property tax rate is 0.27%, a statewide average — the lowest in the US. On a $300,000 home, the bill is just $810 a year. In Illinois, the same home would cost over $6,000.

The catch is obvious, though. Hawaii home values are the highest in the nation, so very few owners are actually paying tax on a $300,000 property. A low rate on a $900,000 home is still a substantial cheque. Rate: unbeatable. Bill: not necessarily small.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Hawaii have twelve tax brackets?
Historical layering, mostly — Hawaii built a finely graduated system with more steps than any other state. Act 46 (2024) then roughly doubled each bracket’s width, which softened how fast you climb through them without removing any steps.

Is Hawaii’s 11% top rate the highest in America?
It’s the second-highest. And it only applies to taxable income over $325,000, so it doesn’t touch a $75,000 salary directly.

What’s the difference between the GET and a sales tax?
A sales tax is charged to the buyer on a sale. Hawaii’s General Excise Tax is charged to the business on its gross receipts, and businesses typically pass it on visibly at about 4.166%. It also covers services and activities a normal sales tax wouldn’t reach.

Are Hawaii property taxes really the lowest?
By rate, yes — 0.27% on average. By dollars paid, not always, because Hawaii property values are the nation’s highest.

Why is my Hawaii tax higher than friends’ in other states on the same pay?
On $75,000, Hawaii takes $4,169.86 in this example — more than any other state in our series. A small standard deduction and a steady climb through the middle brackets do it.
