Alabama runs a graduated state income tax in 2026, with rates from 2% up to 5% depending on how much you earn, on top of federal income tax and FICA. Single filers get a standard deduction of $3,000. Use the calculators below to see your exact 2026 take-home pay in Alabama, check the sales tax on a purchase, and estimate a mortgage payment with Alabama property taxes factored in.
State Paycheck Calculator 2026
Estimate take-home pay after federal tax, FICA and your state’s income tax for the 2026 tax year.
How it works: the 2026 federal standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly) comes off your salary first, then the 2026 federal brackets (10%–37%). FICA is applied properly: 6.2% Social Security on the first $184,500 of wages (2026 wage base), 1.45% Medicare on all wages, plus 0.9% additional Medicare on wages above $200,000 single / $250,000 married filing jointly. State tax applies each state’s own standard deduction/exemptions, then its brackets or flat rate. Local income taxes are not included — many cities and counties (e.g. New York City, Philadelphia, most of Ohio, Maryland counties, Indiana counties, Kentucky) levy their own payroll taxes on top of the state tax.

The statewide base sales tax rate in Alabama is 4% in 2026. Cities and counties can add their own local tax on top of the base rate — enter any local add-on below to see the full tax and total price.
Sales Tax Calculator 2026
Estimate the sales tax and total price using each state’s base rate (2026), plus any local add-on.
State base rates are the 2026 state-level rates (local add-ons excluded). Actual combined rates vary widely by city and county — many localities add 1–5%. Five states have no statewide sales tax (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon), though some localities still levy local taxes.
Mortgage calculator for Alabama homes
The average effective property tax rate in Alabama is about 0.38% of a home’s value per year. When you use the mortgage calculator below, enter roughly that percentage of the home price in the yearly property tax field for a realistic Alabama monthly payment.
Mortgage Payment Calculator
Work out your monthly principal & interest payment, total interest and the true total cost of your loan.
How it works: your loan amount (price minus down payment) is repaid in equal monthly instalments using the standard amortisation formula, so early payments are mostly interest and later ones mostly principal. Property tax and insurance, if entered, are simply spread evenly across each month. Your actual rate and payment will depend on your lender, credit profile and the deal you choose.
$3,101.50. That’s what Alabama takes from a $75,000 salary — less than you’d guess from its 5% top rate. The reason is a rule almost no other state still offers: you get to deduct the federal income tax you paid before Alabama touches your income. It sounds like a footnote. It isn’t. On a middle-class salary it knocks thousands off your taxable income.
Income tax in Alabama in 2026
Alabama’s brackets are short and old-fashioned:
- 2% on the first $500 of taxable income
- 4% on taxable income from $500 to $3,000
- 5% on taxable income over $3,000
See the problem? The top rate arrives at $3,000. Nearly every full-time worker lives in that 5% bracket, so the lower rungs save you only about $40 a year versus a flat tax.
The deductions do the real work. A single filer gets a $3,000 standard deduction — though it slides down as income rises, bottoming out at a $2,500 floor, and at $75,000 you’ll still get the full amount. There’s also a $1,500 personal exemption.
But the federal deduction is the headline act. Paid the IRS $7,670? Alabama pretends that money was never yours to tax. The calculator on this page builds that in, which is why its Alabama number comes out lower than a back-of-the-envelope 5% calculation.
The catch is local. A few cities and counties tack on small occupational taxes — roughly 0.07% of income on average where they apply. They’re not in the calculator, and they’re minor, but they’re there.
Worked example: $75,000 salary, single filer
Step 1: Build the state tax base. Take $75,000, subtract the $7,670.00 federal tax Alabama lets you deduct, the $3,000 standard deduction, and the $1,500 personal exemption. You’re left with state taxable income of $62,830.
Step 2: Run the brackets. 2% of $500 is $10. 4% of the next $2,500 is $100. And 5% of the remaining $59,830 is $2,991.50. Add them up: Alabama income tax of $3,101.50 — an effective rate of about 4.1% of your gross pay.
Step 3: Federal tax. After the federal standard deduction of $16,100, your federal income tax is $7,670.00.
Step 4: FICA. Social Security takes $4,650.00 and Medicare takes $1,087.50, for a total of $5,737.50.
Step 5: What’s left is yours. $75,000 minus $7,670.00, $5,737.50 and $3,101.50 leaves take-home pay of $58,491.00 a year — about $2,249.65 every two weeks.
Sales tax in Alabama
The state rate is 4.00%. On a $1,000 purchase, that’s $40 to the state — cheap, on paper.
Don’t stop there. Cities and counties pile their own taxes on top, and combined rates can push much higher than 4%. Groceries get taxed too. So the checkout line, not the paycheck, is where a lot of Alabamians feel the tax system most.
Property tax in Alabama
Here’s the trade-off, and it’s a good one. Alabama’s average effective property tax rate is 0.38% — a statewide average, and the second-lowest in the US.
On a $300,000 home, you’ll pay about $1,140 a year. Compare that with Connecticut or New Jersey and it’s not even close. Your exact bill shifts by county and by exemptions you claim, sure. But wherever you land in Alabama, property tax is unlikely to be the bill that ruins your month.
Frequently asked questions
Can I really deduct my federal taxes in Alabama?
Yes, and it’s automatic when you file. Alabama is one of the few states that still allow it, and the calculator here uses it — that’s a big reason the state tax in the worked example is only $3,101.50 on a $75,000 salary.
Why is the standard deduction only $3,000?
Because the federal deduction does the heavy lifting instead. Alabama’s standard deduction is small, and it shrinks toward $2,500 as income rises, but most filers save far more from deducting their federal tax bill than they would from a bigger standard deduction.
Does Alabama tax groceries?
It does. The 4% state rate applies, plus whatever your city and county add, so food shopping costs more in tax here than in states that exempt groceries.
What are those local occupational taxes?
Small wage taxes charged by a handful of localities, averaging around 0.07% of income where they exist. On $75,000 that’s roughly $52 a year. Annoying, not life-changing — and not included in the calculator.
Is Alabama cheap for homeowners?
For property tax, absolutely. At 0.38% on average, only one state ranks lower.
Plug your own salary into the paycheck calculator at the top of this page, then test a purchase price in the sales tax calculator and a home price in the mortgage calculator — Alabama’s quirks change the answers fast.
